Tuesday 8/14/12

Oh my goodness gracious.  I forgot to his the "publish" button last evening, so last night's assignments weren't on the blog.  I'm very sorry!

We are very excited to welcome a new student to our class-- we are now a room full of 26 smiling faces!  We're continuing to work hard on developing fourth grade work, study, and behavior habits.

In Science, we're finishing up Heat, Sound, and Light mini poster projects.  Today was going to be our last day to work on them in class; however, science was interupted with a severe weather drill and we didn't get enough time.  Therefore, we will have another day in class to finish these.  Their final due date will be Friday.  If students don't finish them in class tomorrow, they will complete them as homework.

In reading, we read through part of this week's story.  It's so long, we didn't make it all the way!  But we will finish tomorrow.  We talked about our vocabulary, then got to the meaty stuff:  prefixes and suffixes!  Our discussion will hopefully help us complete our reading logs this week!  We also started reading the novel, Escaping the Giant Wave.  Students are allowed to read ahead in their books, but they may not share with others the events in the book.  No spoilers!

In writing, we're working on developing a classroom rubric to grade our writing.  Today, we talked about and started to practice the trait of ideas.  We'll work on that some more tomorrow!  In English, we're working on statements and questions-- otherwise know as declarative and interrogative sentences.  Look for some exciting homework!!

In Social Studies, we're continuing our study of maps in small groups.  We're becoming quite the cartographers!

In math, we FINALLY got to practice with our compasses today.  They are tricky little things!  But we're learning and trying!  Our first unit is coming to a close.  We will be having our math test next Tuesday over the geometry topics we've learned so far.  I think we'll be ready, but feel free to quiz your kidlets on the following things:
  • types of quadrilaterals
  • what makes a polygons
  • line segments, rays, and lines... and how to name them
  • what is a parralellogram and what isn't
There will also be basic addition and subtraction facts!

Hope all is well in your residential world!   Let me know if there's anything you need from me!
