Last here i9s a letter from Mrs. Fiete to does who have this stuff.
Classroom Needs
There are a couple things that we're going to need in the coming weeks in our classroom. I posted some of this information on the blog, but Ithought I'd send something home, too!

Science
In a couple months, we will be doing a science experiment involving static electricity. For that, we need empty plastic peanut butter jars. I know we don,t go through these daily, so I yhought I,d send a head's up now. Any extra would be appreciated too!

Auction
At the end of every nine weeks our classroom holda a auction. The auction is followed by a celebration for those students reciving less than 2 life skill agreements. At the auction, students use the classroom money they earned to buy things. To help contribute to our auction prizes, I encourage students to go through their own belonigs, and find things they no longer need or play with. These items can be donated to the classroom action and sold. S tudents should not bring in items of great value. In the past, students have brought in action figures, books, toys, games, and stuffed animals. If you would like to purchase some items for the action, it would be greatly appreciated as well, I suggest heading to the dollar store and pick up some fun knick- knacks or gizmos.

Well that was all from Mrs. Fiete hope you have a CRAZY THURSDAY!!!

Taco Tuesday

Yes, we actually had tacos for lunch, too!

We started off the day going over our reading vocab, the parts of nonfiction books, and popcorn reading our story. In English, we went over our homework about plural and singular nouns. Then we worked on our first (introductory/thesis) paragraph of our autobiography. We shared all of our paragraphs to make SURE we were off to a go start. **Ask your students about the sentence that killed me, and now I've banned. :) ** In math, we talked about place value, reviewed polygons, and did our ever-exciting math boxes. Our math lessons are stretching so long, we've missed science both yesterday and today. But don't worry. Fun things with cells are on the horizon!

Homework:
  • Math Study Link 2-3
  • Spelling Packet due Fri
  • Reading Log due Thurs
  • Job Application due Thursday
  • Leaf Collection due 9/28
Student council elections will be held on Friday. Students running must give a speech at least one minute long to the class on Thursday. If a student does not make the speech, he or she may not run. Posters may be brought in at any time. Students may not give away any objects as part of campaign.

New Policy

Effective Monday, September 20th, there will be a new classroom policy regarding assignments not being turned in. If a student fails to turn in an assignment, that student will call his/her parent or guardian to let them know that they didn't turn in an assignment. Students will call multiple numbers until they are able to SPEAK to their parent. They will call multiple times throughout the day, if necessary.

The amount of assignments being turned in is simply unacceptable. Please be aware of this policy.

Thankfully Thursday

Whew! There was lots going on today! We started the day going over our morning work and minute math. Then, we moved right into reading. We read with friends and come up with lists of words with prefixes and suffixes. In writing, we read aloud some authors' work from our RAFTS assignment. We had to have a classroom discussion about our level of effort and attentiveness. I feel that both are lacking and we talked about how to get back to where we were. After lunch and recess, we had math. We explored Washington DC and the different ways numbers are used. Finally, we finished up the day with an open-book social studies test.

  • Spelling Packet due tomorrow
  • Spelling Test tomorrow
  • Reading test tomorrow

Terrific Tuesday

We had a great day today! We introduced our new vocab words, then we listened to our story about Lou Gherig. Reading logs, spelling lists, and spelling packets were ceremoniously passed out to a wild cheer of applause (or maybe that was just in my mind? I did have baseball on the brain after the story.). Following that, we went over our classroom jobs and applications. We had art class, where Mrs. Connor says we were angels! After art, we came upstairs and completed a RAFTS writing piece-- ask your student what that is! After lunch, recess, and silent reading, we trotted off to the library to learn more about finding books in the Fiction section of the library. Upon return to the room, we buckled down and studied for tomorrow's math test. It was a great day!

Please remember that I will not be here tomorrow, but I fully expect the very best out of all the kiddos!!

Finally Friday...

Today was another full day! We started it with the fan favorites (insert sarcasm here) spelling and reading tests. From there we moved onto writing where we were able let our creativity run wild! We had free writing today, then shared what we wrote. We have some budding authors in our class! After lunch and recess we worked with partners on some Math pages, then we went over them as a whole class. We ended the day working on our Indiana Math projects and jamming out to a little Bon Jovi, MC Hammer, Journey (sung by the Glee Cast) and Rhianna.

No homework over the weekend! Enjoy the Rest!

Marvelous Monday

Hello all! Hope you had a great weekend! We had a busy day....

We started the day with Power 1/2 Hour. Then we barreled right into Reading. We learned our new vocab words, and listened to our new story. After that, we talked a little more about narrative elements: resolution and conflict. Fun with that! In English we talked about creating solid topic and thesis statements. Additionally, we worked on a grammar assignment with nouns. We practiced and shared. In Math, we worked with compasses, creating an inscribed circle. It was tricky! Then, we learned a new math game: Polygon Pair Up. We played with partners.

Homework:
  1. Reading Log due Thurs
  2. Spelling Packet due Friday
  3. English pg 76 #1-9 due tomorrow
  4. Math Journal Page 16 due tomorrow

Fantastic Friday

OOPS... I saved this as a draft instead of posting! Better late than never?

Week two complete? Check!

Today was a whirlwind day. We started with our morning work quiz, reading test, and spelling test. SNOOZE! Then we did an English assignment about declarative and interogative sentences. After Spanish, we helped our Brown Family by taking out the ENTIRE SCHOOL'S recycling bins. Then we did "Speak The Language" with some more reading-based terms. After recess we went back to work on Math. In math, we used straws and twist ties again to create larger shapes. In Social Studies we worked on our vocab journals.

Tonight, there's no homework. Friday Folders are coming home. I encourage parents to review student grades and ask questions.

Two things of note:
Scholastic book orders due next Friday 9/3
Chicken Biscuit sale ($2.50 each) next Thursday 9/2

Thoughtful Thursday

Schwew! Our brains are tired tonight! We started the day with Reading, where we reviewed a lot of prefixes and suffixes, and their meaning. Then we dug into our story to find words with prefixes and suffixes. We took a break for Spanish. For English, we did "Speak the Language" where we review some of the words we might encounter in our testing adventures. We talked about what they mean and when to use them. Following that, we wrote in our writer's notebooks. During math we talked more about quadrilaterals and parallelograms. Social studies brought a vocabulary journal to work on. Schwew! Tomorrow will only bring more challenges and opportunities!

Homework:
  1. Reading: finish the prefix/suffix chart: due tomorrow
  2. Reading Test tomorrow
  3. Spelling test tomorrow
  4. Spelling packet due tomorrow

Wacky Wednesday

Well, it was a wacky day in room 217. It started with yours truly, Mrs. Fiete, singing about losing her chalk; then moving on to singing "Don't Stop Believing." Some of the students started to sing along with me! It was great! But alas, all the shenanigans had to come to an end with the 9am bell.

We started the day with reading. We read a poem by Mya Angelou. We talked about its imagery, as well as discussed why it was chosen to be paired with our story. Students used their appointment clocks to break into pairs, where they read the story aloud and answered some comprehension questions. In English, we chatted more about the different types of sentences and nouns. After music, we got our pictures taken. (CHEESE!) We went to the computer lab for a while. After lunch and recess, we got to do some really cool math. We used straws and twist ties to create geometric shapes: triangles and quadrilaterals (squares, rhombus, parrallelogram, rectangle, trapezoids). Students will be bringing home their straws home tonight--- ask them to show you their shapes! Also, ask them to describe the shapes-- why is it a square and not a rectangle? We finished up our day with a little social studies and working with maps. All in all, not a shabby day.

Homework:
  1. Reading Log due tomorrow
  2. Spelling Pretest Tomorrow
  3. Finish Math Journal Page 8
  4. Spelling Packet due Friday

Reminder: Book Club Orders are due NEXT friday: 9/3

Oops I did it again!

I missed TWO days this time. Man, I guess I'm still in summer mode. I apologize for the lack of posts. Hopefully your student was able to keep you up to date with what we've done in class.

Today, we took our DIBELS test. Remember, this test measures how fast students read. This year, they added a comprehension component. Today, we also popcorn read our story. We continued to work in English on declarative (statments) and interrogative (questions) sentences, as well as nouns and pronouns. We even got to write in our Writer's Notebooks for twenty minutes! We went to the library and practiced finding fiction books, then checked out new books. Finally, we ended the day with a MATHATHON. Lots of math! We're learning about lines, line segments, points, and rays. We also learned a new game we'll play tomorrow called "Top It." It was a jam-packed day!

PLEASE REMEMBER PICTURE DAY IS TOMORROW!!

Homework:
  1. Reading log due Thursday
  2. Spelling packet due Friday
  3. Spelling pretest Thursday
  4. English Page 17, #17-25 -- circle the nouns and pronouns in blue too! Due Wednesday-- tomorrow
  5. Math Study Link 1-2 due Wednesday, tomorrow. (Students should be bringing home a letter about math that includes answers to the study link so that you can help them!)
  6. Scholastic Book Orders due 9/3/2010

Belated Thursday

Hey everyone! Sorry for my belated Thursday post. Yesterday, our computer systems at BCSC went down completely! YIKES! I had a meeting after school, and by the time I got home I completely forgot about posting. I guess I need to get my brain in gear for this school year! I apologize for any inconvenience this might have caused.

Yesterday, we worked in our English books with complete sentences and fragments (as your student what a fragment is!). We also took a spelling pretest. We voted on our class read aloud: Pictures of Hollis Woods by Patricia Reilly Giff. We took a division timed test. In the afternoon we took a pre-assessment for this year's math series. This test will not be graded. It just helps us see at the end of the year how much our kidlets have grown in the brain power!! We finished up the day learning about how to make inferences in literature. We worked on a sheet together!

I won't post homework since, well.... yesterday is over. :) I'll be sure to post tonight!

Here's to a super day!!!

From the Desk of Mrs. Winings

Dear Fourth Grade Parents,

The state of Indiana requires that all fourth grade students have their hearing screened. The hearing screenings were completed on August 16th and 17th. Please note that only parents of students who did not pass the screening will be sent a letter stating that retesting will be completed in the next two weeks. If your child does not pass the second screening, parents will be contacted by phone to discuss results and any recommendations. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.

Thank you,

Cindy Winings

Tuesday's Homework

Another great day! We had hearing assessments this morning, if students have any discrepancies in their testing, Mrs. Winings will let you know. We took a math timed test, listened to our story, and reviewed our lifeskills. Tomorrow, we have Music, library AND computer lab! Whoo! We took a beginning of the year assessment in the morning. We're off to a great start and I'm very excited to be a part of this great group of people!

Homework:
Reading log due Thursday
Spelling packet due Friday
Spelling pretest Thursday
Spelling Test Friday
Lifeskills crossword due tomorrow (students should bring home definitions on a separate sheet to help!)

Parent Help?

I'm in need of some parent help with an organization task. With our new math series, we have a number of workbooks. On of these workbooks is filled with pages for students to take home as homework or to show their parents what they've learned. In order to create less confusion for the students (I hope!), I want to not hand out those workbooks, but instead pull out the pages for each lesson and group them into a file folder. So I'd pull out all of the lesson one pages, and put them in a file folder together. All of the lesson two pages (one from each workbook) would go into another file folder. I'd love to have a parent volunteer come in and help with this organizational task. If you would be interested/willing, I'd really appreciate it. Please contact me if you're available. If not, there will be plenty of opportunities for you throughout the year!!

Back to School Info

About Mrs. Fiete:

I grew up on the west side of Indianapolis, where I graduated from Ben Davis High School with Honors. I attended my freshman year of college at DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois. Then, I transferred to Indiana University, Bloomington where I graduated with a double major of elementary education and special education. I received my Master's Degree from Indiana Wesleyan University in 2008.

I taught for three years at IPS School #60 at 34th and Meridian Street, in downtown Indianapolis. I joined the Brownsburg community 5 years ago at Cardinal Elementary. After two years at Cardinal, I came to Brown to teach fourth grade! This is my eighth year teaching.

I was married this summer, so I'm still adjusting to my new name! I currently live in Danville with my husband and our two dogs. We have a basset hound named Zoe and a golden retriever named Hezekiah.

Grading:

Grades will be put into Powerschool throughout the week. I encourage you to log onto Powerschool to remain up-to-date with your child’s grades. If you are unable to log onto Powerschool, contact me from time to time and I’ll let you know your student’s grades. Grades will be sent home at midterm for every student. Graded papers will be sent home each Friday.

There are many reasons for homework to be assigned in my class. All assignments will be posted on the classroom blog: www.mrsfiete.blogspot.com . It is your child’s responsibility to write the assignments in his/her assignment notebook. The will receive classroom money for filling out their assignment notebook and getting it signed. I will not assign homework that should take over an hour for your child to complete. The only times your child could have more than an hour’s worth of homework is due to being absent or not utilizing work time given in class.

Responsibility is a character trait we will be working on this year and your child will be practicing it daily. I generally do not require students to turn work in on the day assigned, so your child may take their work home and double check it. First and last name must be written in cursive on every paper. Papers requiring a heading (on loose leaf paper) must have all the components, or receive points off the assignment.

Math:

Brownsburg has adopted a new math curriculum called Everyday Math. This curriculum is very different from our math programs in the past. It’s a different way of thinking about math completely. As we get into the groove and adjust to this new curriculum, we have been warned there may be bumps in the road for students, parents AND teachers. As we navigate these new waters together, I encourage you to have patience with this new method. My hope is that we’ll have smooth sailing sooner than later! There will be more information on Everyday Math throughout the coming weeks. I encourage you to look over information sent home and never hesitate to ask questions!

Knowing and mastering math facts is essential in the fourth grade. Students will be given timed tests for grades. Students will be expected to complete 100 math problems in 5 minutes. Students will first master addition, then subtraction, then multiplication, and finally division. All facts should be mastered by May of 2011. It’s essential that they practice these facts at home! Please let me know if you need flash cards, game ideas, or website where student can master their facts. Periodically, I’ll list these ideas on the website.

Reading:

Fourth grade is a big year for students. No longer are they learning to read, but instead they are reading to learn. This is an important and tumultuous jump. Stories in the reading book, as well as novels, will be longer and more time consuming. Students will have to go back to the text to answer more complex questions. This goes for science and social studies too! We will be reading out of both the textbook and outside books.

Just like last year, students will be administered the DIBELS test to measure their reading fluency. This score determines whether they will receive extra interventions to improve the rate at which they read. Below are the expected levels of fluency throughout the year:

99 wpm fall
105 wpm mid-year
118 wpm end of the year

*wpm = words per minute

Social Studies:

This year, students will be studying Indiana History. We’ll also be working on map skills, timelines, and critical thinking skills.

Science/Health:

This year science and health grades will be combined. We’ll be studying magnets, electricity, weather, states of matter, as well as the scientific method. Students are tested on their science knowledge of ISTEP+ this year. Therefore, it’s important that they understand many of the scientific foundations. In health, we’ll be learning ways to manage our emotional and physical health. It’s all about making good choices!

Handwriting:

No handwriting grades will be given. Students should be able to write their first and last name in cursive legibly. They should also be able to read cursive. They are not required to write in cursive.

Discipline/ Behavior Management:

My classroom discipline policy is also known as “cards.” Each student has a series of colored cards. Each day, each student will start on green. If a rule is broken or an inappropriate behavior occurs, the student will be asked to “flip a card.” The series of cards and rewards/penalties for the week are as follows:

Green = GREAT! Student will earn 5 dollars

Yellow = Caution! Student will earn 2 dollars

Classroom Supplies:

Your students should be set with all the necessary supplies to start the school year. However, you may need to replenish their supplies throughout the year. If your student is missing some necessary supplies, I will try my best to send home a note in their Friday folder. If you need assistance with getting or replenishing supplies, please contact the school’s office or myself—we’ll put you in touch with someone that can help!

Water Bottles:

I allow water bottles in my classroom. If your child has some type of water bottle, they may bring it in for use. Please make sure it is a bottle you do not mind having your child write their name on and it must have a lid (sports bottles are perfect!). Due to health issues, I expect water bottles to go home frequently to be washed or a new one may be brought in. Please, no flavored water.

Book Orders:

Periodically throughout the year I will send home a book order form. This is a great way to get great literature at a discounted price only available to school systems. For every dollar spent, our class earns one point towards purchasing reading and learning materials for the classroom. If you make a purchase, please pay by checks made payable to Scholastic Book Clubs. If you’d ever like to make a purchase as a gift, let me know and I can work with you to get the books to you.

School Language:

As adults, we understand that certain language is not to be used in certain situations. Fourth graders are learning this skill. Curse words are not permissible at school for any reason. Additionally, the following words are sometimes acceptable outside of school but are not in the classroom. Students will receive a consequence for using any of the following words:

sucks
blows
frickin' or freaking
retard or retarded
gay

bites

Any language that is considered offensive or aggressive will have a consequence.

Communication:

Parents know their children better than anyone-- including their teachers! In order for this year to be as successful as possible, it's important for parent and teacher to communicate openly and freely. Please never hesitate to contact me. Email works best for me, but I am able to return phone calls during lunch and after school. Together, we can make this a great year for our students!
