MONDAY PS

PICTURE DAY WEDNESDAY 8/22

Just Another Manic Monday

Hey everyone!  It was a very busy day!

In Science, we reviewed HEAT by completing a crossword with partners.

In Reading, we previewed this week's vocabularly words. Then, we listened to the story from the book.  We got our reading logs, spelling lists, and spelling packets.  For the last HOUR of reading, students had the option of working alone or with a partner on ten short-answer questions.  If they didn't finish these questions in class, they should be compelted from homework.

We worked on organizing our writing today during Writing class by writing about what we did yesterday, or what we've done so far today.  We are trying to make sure our writing pieces have a beginning, middle, end, and plenty of transition words to organize our thoughts!

In Social Studies, students were able to finish up their WHERE IN THE WORLD AM I? packet in class.  We've had 4 days to work on this in class.  I handed out a review sheet to help students prepare for tomorrow's social studies test.  Tomorrow's test is a two day event.  The test is open-book.  Students will have all of social studies class time on Tuesday to complete the test.  Tests may be taken home on Tuesday evening to work on at home or have a parent check over.  Tests do not have to be taken home.  Students will have class time on Wednesday to finish their tests.  If they are done with their tests, they may use Social Studies class time to work on other homework or read.   Social Studies test will be due at the end of class on Wednesday.

In math, students were given a study guide for Unit 1.  STudents attempted to complete the study guide on their own.  Then, we reviewed the entire study guide as a class and went over the answers one by one. All students should have all the correct answers for these questions.  If students review their study guide and know how to perform the tasks on their study guide, they should be successful on their test.

Grading Note from Mrs. Fiete

Hey all!  It's Mrs. Fiete, and I'm doing some grading here tonight, and I wanted to throw a couple items out there for everyone:

  • Students must read and follow all directions on assignments.  (I'm grading some papers where that OBVIOUSLY didn't happen for the majority of the class)
  • On English assignments: from here on out, if you don't use proper capitalization and punctuation, it will be counted incorrect.  (On this particular assignment, all you had to do was COPY the sentence correctly!  Come on!)
  • I told the students this, so this is for the parents:  If students misspell a word on their vocabulary page from reading, it will be counted incorrect.  The words are on the page to copy.
  • All papers should have first and last names as well as numbers.  If those are missing-- it's a tally!
  • Penmanship matters.  Please write neatly.

Thanks!  See everyone in the morning!!

Tuesday 8/14/12

Oh my goodness gracious.  I forgot to his the "publish" button last evening, so last night's assignments weren't on the blog.  I'm very sorry!

We are very excited to welcome a new student to our class-- we are now a room full of 26 smiling faces!  We're continuing to work hard on developing fourth grade work, study, and behavior habits.

In Science, we're finishing up Heat, Sound, and Light mini poster projects.  Today was going to be our last day to work on them in class; however, science was interupted with a severe weather drill and we didn't get enough time.  Therefore, we will have another day in class to finish these.  Their final due date will be Friday.  If students don't finish them in class tomorrow, they will complete them as homework.

In reading, we read through part of this week's story.  It's so long, we didn't make it all the way!  But we will finish tomorrow.  We talked about our vocabulary, then got to the meaty stuff:  prefixes and suffixes!  Our discussion will hopefully help us complete our reading logs this week!  We also started reading the novel, Escaping the Giant Wave.  Students are allowed to read ahead in their books, but they may not share with others the events in the book.  No spoilers!

In writing, we're working on developing a classroom rubric to grade our writing.  Today, we talked about and started to practice the trait of ideas.  We'll work on that some more tomorrow!  In English, we're working on statements and questions-- otherwise know as declarative and interrogative sentences.  Look for some exciting homework!!

In Social Studies, we're continuing our study of maps in small groups.  We're becoming quite the cartographers!

In math, we FINALLY got to practice with our compasses today.  They are tricky little things!  But we're learning and trying!  Our first unit is coming to a close.  We will be having our math test next Tuesday over the geometry topics we've learned so far.  I think we'll be ready, but feel free to quiz your kidlets on the following things:
  • types of quadrilaterals
  • what makes a polygons
  • line segments, rays, and lines... and how to name them
  • what is a parralellogram and what isn't
There will also be basic addition and subtraction facts!

Hope all is well in your residential world!   Let me know if there's anything you need from me!

Mrs. Fiete

Thursday August 9th

We had a busy day today.  Reading got a little boring because we had to do seat work and take our DIBELS test, but we survived.  We started English today, which was review of sentences.  We rocked out Math-- talking about quadrilaterals and parralell lines.  TGIF... well, almost.  Expect Friday folders with completed work to come home tomorrow.

Hope you all have a great day!

Tuesday 8/7/12

Greetings and salutations!  We had another busy day!  Scientists continued to work on their sound, light, and heat journals.  We're taking our time to make sure we know how to do everything at fourth grade level!  In reading, we reviewed vocabulary, learned two new ways to read (one sentence and choral), and spent a long time reviewing this week's story.  The illustrations gave almost as much information as the story itself!  Remember, we will have a quiz on the story on Thursday!  We went to the Computer Lab during Writing to take SRI quizzes.  Everyone was really patient as we worked through computer and sign-on glitches.  I really appreciate each student's patience.  In social studies, we talked more about the Earth's hemispheres, and in Math we cranked out some serious geometrical knowledge!

Have a great night everyone!

Homework:
  • Reading: Reading Log due Thurs (front and back)
  • Spelling: pg 1 in pkt due tomorrow

Monday 8/6

Woot! Woot!  Another great day in 217.  Time really flies, and when the dismissal bell rang-- we weren't all packed up!  We had our assignment notebooks filled out and homework in expandable folders, but we weren't packed with our chairs up.  That's what we get for having too much mathematical fun.  Here's tonight's homework. There is nothing to turn in tomorrow.  Have a great night! See everyone in the morning!

Day 2... Another Success!

We had a great day in room 217 today.  Today we went on a tra-la-la to fire drill location, our tornado drill location, through the office, and through Mr. Burke's room.  We completed a math packet in class with partners.  It covered all of last year's math topics.  It was a great review!  We completed timed tests for subtraction, addition, and multiplication.  These will not be put into the grade book.  They will help us see what we need to practice.  Parents can expect these timed tests to come home next week.  They will help you know what and how much to practice.  Remember, these facts need to be on instant recall.  We had a fantastic presentation by one of our students who is able to recite all the US Presidents last names in the order in which the served in office.

If you need assistance getting any or all of the school supplies, let me know.

REMEMBER:  Monday we will begin giving darts & tallies.
3 darts = a demerit and trip to the office
5 darts or tallies in a week = a detention
BRING YOUR 'A' GAME!

Have a fantastic weekend everyone!
Mrs. Fiete

Hey everyone!  We had a busy first day.  We went over rules, expectations, procedures, and took a tour of the building (we called it a tra-la-la).  We also put together our expandable folders and passed out some of our textbook.  We will do more beginning of year preparation tomorrow too, and hopefully some academic things as well!

Everyone get some good rest tonight! See you in the morning!
